
Dr. Bimal Patel is an architect, urbanist and academic who has crisscrossed disciplinary, professional and institutional boundaries to explore how architecture, urban design and urban planning can enrich the lives of people in India’s cities.
He leads HCP, a design and planning practice that is over sixty years old. Between 2012 and 2024 he was the President of CEPT University. In 1996, he founded Environmental Planning Collaborative (EPC), a not-for-profit consultancy, policy research and advocacy organisation.
Patel received a Diploma in Architecture from CEPT, Ahmedabad, in 1984. He received a dual Master’s in Architecture and City Planning in 1988, and a PhD in City and Regional Planning in 1995 from the University of California, Berkeley.
Some of his notable works are: the Sabarmati Riverfront Development Project, Ahmedabad; Eastern Waterfront Development, Mumbai; Transformation of Central Vista, New Delhi; Shri Kashi Vishwanath Dham, Varanasi; New Campus for the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad; Aga Khan Academy, Hyderabad, and; the Restoration of Gandhi Ashram in Ahmedabad.
Dr. Patel and his projects have been conferred with numerous awards including the Aga Khan Award for Architecture (1992), the Prime Minister’s National Award for Excellence in Urban Planning and Design (2002), and the Padma Shri (2019).
